Learn How to Mate in 1: King Safety
This middlegame puzzle is a pure mating pattern: White’s queen and bishop coordinate to exploit the exposed black king. The key idea is that king safety outweighs material when the enemy monarch has weakened shelter and limited escape squares. Even though Black has extra material, the position is tactically lost because the white queen can deliver a direct checkmate once the king’s flight squares are controlled. In classical chess, these one-move finishes often come from active piece placement and a vulnerable king.
