Learn How to Spot Back Rank Mate: Mate in 1
This middlegame puzzle is a classic back rank mate pattern: the enemy king is boxed in by its own pieces, and a rook on an open file can deliver immediate mate. The key idea is that the defending king has no flight squares and no piece can interpose in time. Even though the position looks materially balanced, the tactical reality is far more important than the static count. When a rook is lined up with the king and the back rank is weak, the game can end instantly.
