Learn How to Spot Smothered Mate: Mate in 1
This puzzle comes from the Scandinavian Defense and shows a classic smothered mate pattern in a very compact tactical setting. The key idea is that the enemy king’s escape squares are blocked by its own pieces, so a knight can deliver checkmate even when the position looks materially unbalanced. In classical chess, these motifs often appear when the king is boxed in and the opponent’s queen and minor pieces coordinate to restrict every flight square.
