Learn How to Spot a Mate in 1: Kingside Attack
This puzzle comes from the Philidor Defense and shows how quickly a middlegame can end when king safety collapses. White’s queen and knight are coordinated around the enemy king, creating a direct mating net with no time for defense. Even though the material is close to equal, the attack is overwhelming because the black king’s shelter has been weakened and key escape squares are covered. In classical chess, these are the moments where activity matters more than material.
