Learn How to Spot Mate in 1: Back Rank Mate
This puzzle comes from the Petrovs Defense and shows a classic middlegame mating pattern: the enemy king is boxed in, and a rook can exploit the lack of escape squares. Even when the position looks materially balanced, king safety can outweigh everything else. In classical chess, these tactical shots often appear when a piece on an open file has direct access to the king’s back rank and the defender’s coordination is too loose to respond in time.
