Learn How to Spot Pawnmate: Mate in 1
This puzzle is a classic pawnmate pattern in a sharp middlegame-to-endgame setting. White’s attack works because the black king is boxed in by its own pieces and pawns, leaving only one precise tactical finish. Even though material is heavily imbalanced, king safety is the deciding factor. In classical chess, these positions reward pattern recognition over calculation: when the enemy king has no flight squares, a single pawn push can end the game immediately.
