Learn How to Spot Hook Mate: Mate in 1
This chess endgame puzzle is a classic hook mate pattern: the attacking rook lands on the h-file and uses the enemy pawn as a “hook” to seal the king’s escape squares. Even though White is far behind in material, the position contains a direct mating net because the black king’s shelter is weakened and the rook can deliver immediate checkmate. In classical chess, these tactical motifs often appear when the king is exposed and the back rank or nearby squares are cut off.
