Epaulette mate is a checkmate pattern where the enemy king is trapped on the back rank or edge of the board by its own pieces, usually with two adjacent squares blocked on both sides. The classic image is a king boxed in by its “epaulettes,” or shoulder pieces, while a rook or queen delivers the final check. For a beginner, this is one of the clearest mating patterns to recognize because the king has no escape squares and cannot capture the attacking piece.

To spot epaulette mate, look for a king with friendly pieces directly next to it on both sides, especially when a rook or queen attacks along the rank or file. It often appears after the king has castled and its own pieces have not moved, so the final check lands on a square the king cannot take because the attacker is protected. In your own games, aim to force the king onto a crowded back rank, then line up a rook or queen so the king is checked while its escape squares remain blocked.
