Learn How to Spot Mate in 1: Corner Mate
This puzzle is a classic middlegame mating net where king safety matters more than material. Even though one side may be ahead in pieces, an exposed king can lose immediately if the enemy pieces coordinate on the weak squares around it. Corner mate patterns often appear when the king is boxed in by its own pieces and has no flight squares. In chess endgame or middlegame positions alike, always check for forcing moves first: checks, captures, and threats that end the game on the spot.
