Learn How to Spot Epaulette Mate: King Safety
This puzzle comes from the King's Gambit Accepted and shows a classic middlegame mating pattern. The key idea is epaulette mate: the enemy king is boxed in by its own pieces, leaving no escape squares when the queen lands on the decisive square. Even though Black is materially better, king safety overrides material here. In classical chess, these tactical motifs often appear when development is lagging and the king’s shelter has been weakened by pawn moves.
