Learn How to Spot Boden Mate: Checkmate with Bishop and Knight
This puzzle shows a classic Boden mate pattern in a middlegame from the Rat Defense. The key idea is that two bishops can coordinate to deliver a mating net when the enemy king’s escape squares are blocked by its own pieces. Even though White is materially better, the position is decided by king safety and geometry, not by material count. In classical chess, these patterns often appear after a seemingly quiet move that suddenly ends the game.
