Learn How to Spot a Mate in 1: Smothered Mate
This puzzle comes from the Alekhine Defense and shows a classic mating pattern in a middlegame position. The key idea is that the enemy king is boxed in by its own pieces, leaving only one tactical finish. In positions like this, piece coordination matters more than material count: a knight jump can exploit weak squares, an exposed king, and limited escape routes. Even when one side is materially down, a direct mating net can end the game immediately.
