Learn How to Use Intermezzo: Chess Endgame Tactic
This puzzle shows a classic intermezzo idea in a sharp middlegame-to-endgame transition. Instead of recapturing immediately, White first inserts a forcing check to improve the position and keep the opponent’s king awkwardly placed. That extra tempo matters because the enemy queen and rook coordination is loose, and one active piece can be won by exploiting alignment and pressure. In practical classical chess, these in-between moves often decide whether a tactical sequence becomes a clean material gain.
