Learn How to Deflect the King: Chess Endgame Tactic
This chess endgame puzzle is a classic example of deflection: you force the enemy king away from a key square so a follow-up attack becomes decisive. Even with material close to equal, the side with the more active queen and rook can create a mating net by using checks to drag the king into a worse location. The position also shows how king safety can outweigh raw material when the pieces are coordinated and the defender’s pieces are poorly placed.
