Learn How to Spot Mate in 1: Opening Tactic
This puzzle comes from the Semi-Slav Defense and shows how opening development can turn into a direct mating attack. White’s pieces are active, the black king is slightly exposed, and the queen has access to a decisive checking square. In classical chess, these moments often happen when one side lags in development and key defenders are overloaded or pinned. Even in an opening position, a single tactical shot can end the game immediately if the king’s escape squares are controlled.
