Learn How to Hook Mate: Mate in 3
This chess endgame puzzle is a classic hook mate pattern: the attacking rook uses the enemy king’s limited shelter and the hooked pawn structure to force a mating net. Even though Black is materially ahead, king safety overrides material here. The key idea is that the king is trapped by its own pieces and pawns, while White’s rook activity creates direct threats on the open file and the back rank. In classical chess, these tactical finishes often appear when the defender’s pieces are overloaded.
