Learn How to Spot: Back Rank Mate
This puzzle is a classic back rank mate pattern in a simplified middlegame-to-endgame setting. The key idea is that the enemy king is boxed in by its own pawns, so a rook can deliver a direct checkmate on the h-file. Even though White has a large material edge, the immediate tactic is more important than material counting. In classical chess, these one-move finishes often appear when the king’s escape squares are blocked and a rook has access to the last rank.
